Nishtha Jain (City of Photos, Lakshmi and Me) returns to the Bay Area with this thriller disguised as a documentary! In Bundelkhand, India, a revolution is in the making as the fiery women of the Gulabi Gang take up the fight against gender violence, caste oppression and widespread corruption. Undeterred by sneering policemen and condescending bureaucrats, founder Sampat Pal leads the pink sari-clad women on a remarkable, and impressive crusade for truth and justice. Watching this documentary makes one want to redefine the term “heroine” in Indian films!
Followed by: Panel discussion on gender violence in South Asia, from both a global and a local perspective. The panel will be moderated by Prof. Sangeeta Mediratta from the Center for South Asia, Stanford University. Activist/scholar Huma Dar will bring a Kashmiri perspective to the discussion, and activist/radio-host Preeti Mangala-Shekar will offer a local lens on the issue.
