Lagaan: Once Upon a Time In India

A 2001 Bollywood blockbuster classic directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, Lagaan stars Aamir Khan and Gracy Singh as his leading lady.  A.R. Rahman (Slumdog Millionaire) composed the highly acclaimed musical score, with lyrics by Javed Akhtar.

Farmers facing a delayed start to the Monsoons in a Champaner village in the 1890s are worried they will not be able to pay the land tax imposed by its colonizer, Great Britain. Bhuvan (Aamir Khan) accepts the challenge by the antagonist, British officer Captain Andrew Russell (Paul Blackthorne), to beat his team in a game of cricket and repeal the tax.

The Bollywood epic drew a “crossover” audience as India’s entry to the 2002 Oscars, earning a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film, and 8 National Film awards in India.
